"Virtual MLK Jr. Celebration"

The Merced community unveil a new mural to honor the civil rights leader Dr. Martin King, Jr. on Sunday, Feb. 21, 2021 at the Merced Food Center located on the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Way and 12th Street. The portrait of King, is part of a greater mural featuring farm labor union leader, Cesar Chavez. The mural was painted by Livingston artist Joel Aguilar, who is part of a group called Third Hour Collective. Tamara Cobb is chairwoman of the committee. The community celebration included a DJ, live music and a car show. There were free food and beverages that was donated by Sam's Cafe and the Merced Food Center.

Celebrate the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist Cesar Chavez on March 31 every year.

Cesar Chavez Day 2021 Wednesday, March 31
(1927–93), US labor leader; full name Cesar Estrada Chavez. In 1962, he founded the organization that became the United Farm Workers, and he used nonviolent tactics to gain union contracts with California vineyard owners.
