John Ervin

Member John Ervin III
Modesto City Schools, Area 2

I served in the U.S. Navy and California National Guard for 8 years.  After coming home and moving to Modesto, I founded a small business to employ my fellow veterans and disabled veterans, and then dedicated myself to fighting for all kids.

In 2004, I founded the Project UPLIFT Mentoring Program, inspiring at-risk youths throughout our community.  Then, as an administrator for Modesto City Schools and a longtime teacher, I developed our Community Affairs department from the ground-up, so we could better address the critical needs of marginalized students.  Working with our families, we reduced suspensions, expulsions, and dropouts, while also increasing opportunities for students to access college and trade school.  Then, over just 6 years ago, I grew our afterschool program from serving 100 students to over. 1,500, earning our schools statewide and national recognition.

Austin Grant

Austin Grant  Modesto City Council, District 6

My parents adopted my sister and me when I was just 1 year old, and I have called Modesto home ever since. We didn’t have it all, but we always believed in giving back. That commitment to our community inspired me to lead charity drives and tutoring sessions at Enochs High School, study politics and history at Fisk University, and receive my Master’s degree in Legal Studies from Humphreys University.
