MERCED—Merced County in partnership with the City of Merced, CHP, Caltrans, and non-profit partners began the cleanup of the homeless encampment located near the intersection of Highway 99 and East Childs Avenue.

Advanced noticed was provided to those residing in the encampment, which was located on private property within the unincorporated area. More than 50 individuals were living in the encampment—all of them were offered supportive services and several relocated to available shelter space. Caseworkers worked one-on-one with individuals for weeks leading up to the cleanup and will continue to connect individuals with appropriate services moving forward in an effort to transition them into a stable living environment.

As part of the cleanup, more than 60 vacated encampment structures and several tons of trash were removed by heavy machinery operated by the Merced County Sheriff’s Office and Department of Public Works. While the majority of the cleanup was handled today, additional work will take place on Tuesday and beyond if necessary.

Board of Supervisors Chairman Josh Pedrozo said the cleanup was necessary to protect the health and wellbeing of the community, which includes those residing in the encampment.

“Given the amount of supportive services we offer, encampments like these are unnecessary and pose a significant challenge to our community,” Pedrozo said. “We have options for shelters, transitional and supportive housing, mental health services, substance abuse assistance, food and welfare services, as well as employment services. Individuals experiencing homelessness should utilize these options, and we’ll continue our coordinated efforts to get them connected and off the streets.”

Moving forward, Merced County and its partners remain committed to long-term solutions to homelessness, including expanding access to shelters and transitional housing, improving supportive services, and strengthening partnerships with non-profit organizations and service providers.

Homeless assistance and supportive services can be accessed through Turning Point Community Program’s New Direction Project at 3333 M Street, Merced or by phone at 209-205-3123
