Nut Festival returns to promote industry, community spirit

By Andrew Hardy l November 9, 2024

Returning for its fourth annual installment to shine light on this community’s agricultural legacy and offer a free and safe community celebration, the Merced County Nut Festival took place at the fairgrounds in Merced on Saturday, Oct.19, 2024.

The Nut Festival hosted a wide variety of merchants, live performances, activities, and giveaways. The event featured over 70 vendors, ranging from fresh produce to custom craft goods and fun trinkets. Attendees of all ages could participate in the Bake Off, ride the train around the fairgrounds, play lawn games, and watch an impressive puppet show.
Notably, thanks to the contributions of Vinhos Wine Lounge, the event also featured an expanded wine and beer section for the adults.

The event opened with an address from the Nut Festival’s founder and president, Necola Adams, who spoke proudly and candidly about the challenges she has faced to grow the event.

“This year we have faced many challenges in the nut industry and in our communities, yet, we came back strong every time. The Merced County Nut Festival is no different,” Adams said. “On June 18th, my car was smashed by a hit-and-run driver who ran a stop light. It left me with a serious bruise on my brain that affected my speck, memory, and coordination. Through sheer will and determination, I too have come back strong enough to chair the Merced County Nut Festival Board once again this year. … The Merced County Nut Festival is a labor of love for our communities and the industry that touches so many of our families. We would like to thank all of our sponsors, advertisers, and the many businesses that donate prizes for our raffle. Without each of you none of this is possible. … Thank you to the dignitaries from across the country who donate time as judges for our popular Bake-Off. You truly are marvelous as are the bakers, young and old. We would also like to say thank you to the community for continuing to come out every year to support the Merced County Nut Festival.”
